The Loudoun County Raiders club hockey team got a strong goaltending performance from senior Tom Elwood Jan. 6 at the ashburn Ice House, but lost 2-1 to the Paul VI Panthers. Raiders coach Gregg White credited Elwood for "keeping them in the game."

Elwood saved 14 of 16 shots in the first period, including a glove save on a slapshot from Joe Wallace just 24 seconds after the opening face-off.

Elwood got some defensive help from sophomore forward Paul Boyd. Boyd made a nice poke check on Tim Regan, preventing Regan from getting another shot off.

The Panthers put the first point of the game on the board with 5:07 remaining in the first period. Sean Scanlin stuffed a wrap-around shot with an assist from Matt Pfaff.

The Raiders found themselves a man down when sophomore defenseman Chris Cooper was whistled for his first of two interference penalties with 6:56 left in the first, but the Panthers were unable to score with the man advantage.

Raider Travis White, a junior forward, had a chance to tie the score moments later. He used a burst of speed to elude the Panther defender, but fired the puck wide right.

Elwood kept Paul VI from putting the game away in the first. He made two nice saves on Wallace, including a glove save after Wallace stole the puck at the blue line.

Alexis Cuadros had a breakaway moments later, but couldn't knock the puck past Elwood either.

The Panthers shot their second tally past Elwood at 13:55 in the first. Pfaff picked up his second paont of the night scoring on a rebound. Wallace and Scanlin got the assists.

The Raiders ruined Mike Wolfrey's shutout at 1:33 into the second. When Wolfrey couldn't control a rebound, senoir Matt McQuary shot from an odd angle and somehow got the puck in the net. Boyd and freshman Bobby Babusci earned the assists.

Penalties were plenty in the last half of the contest. Paul VI went on its second power play after White was called for a boarding minor at 7:26 in the second. The Raiders Brian Mulcahy had the best shot in those two minutes, but the junior forward's short-handed shot sailed wide.

Less than a minute later the Raiders were on the power play after Scanlin got an interference call. Despite the man advantage, the Raiders were still unable to shoot the puck past Wolfrey.

In the third period shortened to seven minutes due to time constraints, the Raiders had the first scoring chance. Travis White made a steal at center ice, and fired a slapper that Wolfrey was able to snag.

Elwood recorded 27 saves on 29 shots. Wolfrey made 14 saves on 15 shots.

With the loss, Loudoun County's record slips to 1-2.
